Label Services module preview

We chose The Orchard because it is not an upload service. It is part of Sony Music Entertainment, with teams in more than 40 countries, and it holds the stores' own trust ratings: Spotify lists it as a Preferred distributor, and it is one of the few distributors with Apple Music's Preferred Plus status. Stores know that what comes through The Orchard has been checked, so your releases carry more weight and meet less red tape on the way to their editors.

The Orchard works with labels, not individual uploaders, and does not take unsolicited music. Every release has to meet its content, metadata and rights standards, which is what stores and their editors expect from it. Your releases go out alongside the catalogues of established independent labels, not into an anonymous feed.

That standard is why our Label Services is about quality, not quantity. Our access to The Orchard depends on the catalogue we deliver, so the same rules apply to every label.

1
Prepare

Build the release the way The Orchard asks for it.

Every field follows The Orchard's own product and track forms, with their genre, language, role and pricing lists, so nothing is guessed at delivery.

Tracks and credits β€” Audio, ISRC, performers, songwriters, ownership and samples - per track, with Apply to all for what the whole release shares.

Rights β€” Confirm master, artwork and sample rights, and attach the documents that prove them.

Checked before it goes β€” Missing or invalid fields are named before submission, not after a rejection.

2
Deliver

Submit once. We deliver it to The Orchard.

Submitting locks the release and hands it to us. We deliver it through The Orchard under your own label name, and tell you when it is done.

Your own imprint β€” Releases go out under your label's name, not ours.

Release date warnings β€” Told plainly when a date is too close for the stores to be ready.

3
Live

Change it or take it down, on the record.

Corrections go through an unlock request, and pull-downs through a request we action with The Orchard. Every step is kept, so you can always show what happened to a release.

100% of what The Orchard pays us β€” Included with Pro. No commission and no per-release fee.

Your package β€” Download exactly what we deliver: the metadata sheet, audio, artwork and rights documents.

4
Criteria

Only music you have every right to release.

The Orchard accepts our catalogue because we keep it clean. Every release is checked before it goes, and some music we do not take at all.

No AI-generated audio β€” Music made or voiced by AI is not accepted, in whole or in part.

No cover versions β€” We distribute original recordings only. Covers, soundalikes and tributes are not accepted.

Your copyright β€” You must own or control the master and hold every licence behind it: artists, producers, samples and artwork.

Proof of rights β€” New labels upload the documents with every release, and we can ask for them at any time.

12 tracks per artist, 50 per label β€” Per calendar month, back catalogue included. An album over the limit can be agreed with us.

Questions about Label Services

Label Services

What is Label Services?

Label Services lets your label release its artists' music to every major store and streaming service through The Orchard, under your own label name. You prepare each release in Digitainment, we check it and deliver it. It is included with Pro: no commission and no per-release fee, and you receive 100% of what The Orchard pays us for your releases. It is for labels, managers and agencies that represent artists; we do not contract with artists directly.

Why The Orchard?

Because it is a label distributor, not an upload service. The Orchard was founded in New York in 1997 by producer and songwriter Richard Gottehrer and Scott Cohen, and was one of the first companies to distribute independent music digitally. Sony Music took a majority stake in 2012 and full ownership in 2015, so The Orchard is part of Sony Music Entertainment today, with teams in more than 40 countries. It works with labels rather than individual uploaders, does not take unsolicited music, and holds every release to its content, metadata and rights standards - which is what stores and their editors expect from it.

Why is Label Services about quality, not quantity?

Our access to The Orchard depends on the catalogue we deliver. The Orchard, and the stores behind it, judge a distributor by what comes through it: releases that are original, properly credited and legally cleared. A flood of rushed or low-effort releases would put that access at risk for every label we work with. So every release is checked before it goes, the same rules apply to everyone, and the number of tracks per month is capped. We would rather deliver fewer releases that stores trust than many they don't.

How many tracks can we release?

Up to 12 tracks per artist per calendar month, and up to 50 tracks per label per calendar month across all its artists. Back catalogue counts too. A release counts in the month it is first submitted; if it is sent back for changes, only tracks you add are counted again, and pulling a release down does not give its tracks back. An album that would go over the limit can be agreed with us as a one-off exception: ask from the release page.

What music do you accept?

Original recordings that your label has every right to release. You must own or control the master recordings and hold every licence behind them: artist and producer agreements, sample clearances, remix permissions and artwork. We do not accept AI-generated audio, cover versions, soundalikes or tributes, karaoke, audiobooks, generic relaxation or "functional" content, keyword-stuffed titles, fake or generic artist names, or releases without a clear chain of title. Every release also has to meet The Orchard's own content and metadata requirements, and we may refuse or remove a release that does not.
